I've seen the smash burgers in the past, however, it seems that burger grilling 101 dictates that one should not squish the patty as it loses juices and becomes dry. Even oozy cheese can't make up for a dry burger. They all look interesting. I wouldn't mind being a burger taster for these dudes.
The smash is for the contact with the flat grill surface, after it starts don't squish it again. A big part of it is having it thin enough and hot enough. otherwise it'll just steam itself, and squishing a steaming burger will dry it out. Even with a larger patty that you aren't smashing it's decent form to slap it onto the surface to try to increase the contact area. Obviously if you are using a charcoal or propane grill none of this applies. On an outdoor grill the juices fall and can't be reabsorbed by the burger if pressed.
